VandoVandoDocs

Errors and exit codes

What each exit code means, and what the vando command says when something is wrong, word for word.

Not sure what is wrong? Run vando doctor: it checks this computer and prints the command that fixes each thing.

Exit codes

0: Done

For vando run, the program’s own exit code is passed on.

1: Failed

The first line says what happened, the next what to do. Read the two lines it printed, or run vando doctor.

2: Not understood

The command or a flag wasn’t right. Nothing was sent. Check it with vando help <command>.

75: Waiting for your phone

Nothing has run yet. It prints “Waiting for your phone. Run the same command again to continue.” Approve it on your phone, then run the same command again: it carries on with the same ask.

77: You said no on your phone

Or the access ended. “You said no on your phone. Nothing was run.” Don’t retry in a loop: ask the person.

What it says

Each line is what the vando command prints, recorded from the command itself; the line under each problem is what to do.

$ vando stauts
Error: There is no command "stauts".
Did you mean vando status? vando help lists them all.
[exit 2]
$ vando frobnicate
Error: There is no command "frobnicate".
vando help lists them all; vando on its own says what to do next.
[exit 2]
$ vando status
Error: Not connected.
Run vando connect <code> in your own terminal, with the code from your phone
(Connections → Connect an AI).
[exit 1]
$ vando connect
Error: connect needs the code from your phone.
In the Vando app: Connections → Connect an AI. Then: vando connect <code>
[exit 2]
$ vando connect K7M2XQ4B
Error: Not connected: there is no terminal to check the words at, and nothing
       was sent.
The person runs it in their own terminal: vando connect <code> (it asks which
words their phone shows).
[exit 2]
$ vando connect NOTACODE!
Error: That isn't a connect code. It is 8 letters and digits.
Copy it from your phone: Connections → Connect an AI.
[exit 1]
$ vando setup
Error: This computer isn't connected to your phone yet, and that step needs
       your own terminal (the words check can't run through Claude's tool).
On your phone: Connections → Connect an AI. Then in your own terminal: vando
connect <the code>. Then run vando setup again.
[exit 1]
$ vando add STRIPE_KEY
Error: Not connected.
Run vando connect <code> in your own terminal, with the code from your phone
(Connections → Connect an AI).
[exit 1]
$ vando run -- node x.js
Error: Name what the command needs: a secret, a folder, or an environment of
       this project.
e.g. vando run --secret STRIPE_KEY -- node scripts/refund.js, or vando run
--folder Work/acme/dev -- pnpm dev
[exit 2]
$ vando get STRIPE_KEY
Error: Not printed: vando get puts a value where whatever reads this output
       can keep it (an AI's transcript, a log), and this output is not a
       terminal. Nothing was asked.
Run the program with vando run instead (the value goes into its environment,
never into the output), or run vando get in your own terminal. --yes-print
prints it anyway.
[exit 2]
