Your laptop and Chrome
At the end, the Vando extension in Chrome on your laptop fills and saves logins, and every fill is approved on your phone, unless you trust the laptop for the evening.
Early access: a test build
The extension isn’t in the Chrome Web Store yet. coming Today you load a test build by hand: in Chrome, open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked and pick the extension’s folder.
How it works
The laptop keeps no passwords and holds no keys. When a page wants a login, the extension asks your phone; you approve there, and the password goes to that laptop only. The one exception is a trust window you choose: for a few hours, Easy logins fill without asking. Devices explains who holds what.
Pair it with your phone
On the laptop
Click the Vando button in Chrome’s toolbar, then Connect. It shows a QR code: On your phone: Home › Add a laptop, then scan this. The code works for a few minutes.
On your phone
Tap Add a laptop on Home and scan the code. Both screens show the same words: check they match, and only continue if you’re at that computer.
Choose when it fills
When it wants to fill:
- Ask this phone every time. Every fill waits for your OK on the phone.
- Trust it until 11:00 pm tonight (the time it shows). Easy logins fill on this laptop without asking until then. Anything above Easy still asks your phone.
Tap Connect and use your fingerprint. Your other devices are told. The popup now says Connected to your phone.
Filling a login
Click a login field. The Vando menu lists the logins for that site, each saying Fills without asking (inside a trust window) or Asks your phone. Pick one:
- The page shows Check your phone with the site and the time left (github.com · 1:42 left).
- Your phone shows the ask in your Inbox: who asks (your paired laptop), the site, and the login. Tap Fill or Deny, then do the lock’s steps.
- The laptop fills the form and keeps nothing.
Not listed on the laptop? Pick one on your phone sends just the site, and your phone lists what it has. A login that only opens on your phone says This one opens only on your phone. Nothing was filled. For a passkey, Chrome’s own prompt takes over: choose Use a phone or tablet.
The extension won’t fill a form that belongs to another site inside the page, and asks before filling on a page that isn’t secure (http://).
Saving a login
When you sign in somewhere new, the extension offers Save this github.com login to Vando?, or Update the github.com password in Vando? for one you already have. Click Save and it is sent sealed to your phone: It saves it, or asks you there. This laptop keeps nothing.
- Your vault is open on the phone (you unlocked it in the last 10 minutes, or the time set in Settings → App lock → Keep my vault open for) and the login is new: the phone saves it at once, as an Easy thing, and tells you. The Inbox shows Saved github.com from your laptop with Remove it.
- Anything else waits for you on the phone as Save from your laptop?: the vault was closed, it changes a password you already have, it looks like a bank login, or many saves arrived at once (more than 5 in 10 minutes from one laptop, or 20 in a day). Changing an existing password always asks, through that login’s own lock.
Never for this site stops the offers on that site.
The trust window
A trust window lets Easy logins fill on one laptop without asking your phone. It ends at the time you chose, at most 8 hours from when you started it, and never stretches by itself.
- Start one when you pair, or later from your phone’s Devices, the laptop, Trust it until ….
- The popup shows it: Fills Easy logins until 11:00 pm without asking, with End trust now.
- Just me, Two devices and Fort Knox logins always ask, trust window or not.
- If an AI may be driving the browser, the extension says An AI may be controlling this browser. Every fill asks your phone, and nothing fills without asking.
Access windows puts this next to the other time-limited kinds of access.
Lock, disconnect
The popup has Lock now, and Disconnect this laptop: fills stop and nothing of yours is kept on the laptop. Your phone can cut a laptop off from Devices too.
What can go wrong
- “Your phone didn’t answer in time. Nothing was filled: click the field to ask again.”
- The ask ran out. Open Vando on your phone, then click the field again.
- “Your phone hasn’t opened this yet. Open Vando on your phone.”
- The notification didn’t arrive or wasn’t opened. The ask is in your Inbox.
- “Can’t reach Vando. Fills wait until this laptop is back online.”
- The laptop is offline. Nothing fills until it is back.
- “This laptop isn’t paired with your phone any more. Pair it again.”
- It was disconnected from your phone, cut off, or your vault was recovered on a new phone. Pair it again.
- “The code ran out”
- Pairing codes last a few minutes. Click Connect again for a new one.
